St Clare was a very special friend of Saint Francis.
She lived at St Damian’s, just outside the town of Assisi.
Some of St Francis’ brothers travelled to faraway places to tell people of the love of Jesus. One of the places they went to was the city of Prague in Bohemia.
The king of Bohemia was a very powerful king and Agnes (Anežka) one of his daughters heard the bothers preaching and she invited them to her father’s palace to tell her more about how Brother Francis and Sister Clare lived.
When Princess Agnes heard the way they lived she wanted to live just as St Clare lived.
She wrote a letter and sent it back with the brothers (they did not have post or emails in those days).
St Clare wrote four letters to Princess Agnes in Prague, instructing her how to love Jesus and answering all her questions about how she could live just like she lived. Princess Agnes heard that other noble ladies in Prague wanted to do as she was going to do. So she left all her crowns, jewels, nice clothes and lands and built a monastery so that they could live just like St Clare.
